Chamber Music Cincinnati

Dates and Times

Chamber Music Cincinnati begins its 90th Anniversary Season with a once in a lifetime chance to hear one of the world’s great pianists perform all 32 of Beethoven’s extraordinary piano sonatas in one remarkable day.
Stewart Goodyear has performed this “Sonatathon” previously to exceptional acclaim at Toronto’s Koerner Hall, Princeton’s McCarter Theatre, California’s Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, and the Dallas AT&T Performing Arts Center. His 2012 recordings of these works was just reissued on Marquis Classics in a 10 CD box set that is available here.
Of Goodyear’s Beethoven performance, Gramophone has written:
Goodyear responds to the composer’s meticulous linear trajectory, combative dynamics, instinct for drama and aching lyricism with a sense of freshness, rhythmic vivacity and organic sweep that evokes like-minded (albeit dissimilar) Beethoven performances by Schnabel, Gulda, Lipkin, Frank and Kovacevich. His giddy gait and slight accelerations in the second movement of Op 27, No. 1, swing like mad, while the first movement’s central Allegro explodes with fierce abandon and hair-trigger accuracy. These qualities abound in the Moonlight Sonata’s finale…Fast tempi and flexible phrasing invigorate each of the Pastoral Sonata’s four movements and I’ve rarely heard the difficult coda tossed off with such joy and insouciance.
