As we open Summermusik Under the Stars, we examine the link between music, creativity and mental health. Throughout musical history many composers battled through isolation, anxiety and depression to compose some of their most beloved works. To open the season, the orchestra will perform the deeply emotional Lyric for Strings by George Walker, the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. At a time when his mental state was fragile, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky battled through his depression by composing the sunny and lighthearted Variations on a Rococo Theme. Performing on the piece is cello prodigy Sujari Britt, a Manhattan School of Music graduate who has performed for both President Obama and on the National Public Radio program From the Top! Ludwig van Beethoven’s fourth symphony was written in the midst of his despair about his impending hearing loss, helping him find solace in music. As our world struggles with our own mental health crisis, this program will explore the healing quality of music as we come together to enjoy live music once again.Show more
