Fierce female performers and composers will be at the forefront at Women in Musik. Marking just over 100 years since the 19th Amendment gave women a voice at the ballot box, CCO will look at the voice women have in classical repertoire. Opening the program will be a work by violinist and composer Jessie Montgomery, Starburst, which describes a changing galaxy where stars are born at an incredibly fast rate. 2019 United States Artist Fellow in Music, composer Reena Esmail’s Teen Murti conjures a fascinating and unfamiliar sound world based on Indian classical music traditions. Gabriella Smith’s Brandenburg Interstices brings Bach’s fifth concerto into the 21st century. “Preciously gifted” (Gramophone) Grammy-nominated violinist Caroline Goulding will round out Summermusik with Mozart’s “Turkish” fifth violin concerto, one of the few examples where he brings together different cultures in a work. This concert will be a musical dialogue between centuries, styles and cultures – a reflection on the past as the source code of the music so many female composers create today.Show more
